What is AISI 420C stainless steel?

AISI 420C is a martensitic stainless steel containing 12-14% chromium. It can be heat treated to HRC 50-55, giving higher hardness than 304 or 316 while keeping moderate corrosion resistance - a cost effective middle ground for valve and bearing parts.

Are 420C balls suitable for valve applications?

Yes. 420C is one of the most common materials for valve balls and check valve seats. It resists water, steam, oil and many chemicals while the HRC 50-55 hardness keeps the sealing surface from wearing. For highly corrosive media we recommend 316 or 440C instead.

Can 420C balls be used in bearings?

Yes, for low to medium speed bearings and moderately loaded assemblies. Because 420C is hardenable and magnetic, it works well where corrosion resistance matters more than maximum load rating. For high speed or heavy load bearings, 440C or GCr15/52100 chrome steel is usually the better choice.

What is the difference between 420C and 440C?

440C has a higher carbon content (around 1.0%) and reaches HRC 58-62 with better wear resistance, while 420C reaches HRC 50-55 and is easier to machine and more cost effective. 420C is often chosen for valves and general bearings; 440C for high wear precision applications.

What sizes and grades do you supply?

Standard sizes from 1.0 mm to 100 mm in grades G10 to G1000 per AFBMA and ISO 3290. Large diameters and non standard tolerances can be produced to drawing.

What is your minimum order quantity?

Corrosion Resistance

420C balls offer good resistance to fresh water, steam, food acids, alcohol and mild chemicals. They outperform carbon and chrome steel substantially.

Not recommended for: seawater, salt spray or strong acids. For marine service, choose 316; for maximum hardness plus corrosion resistance, choose 440C.
